Staffing Management Association of Southern
New England
Membership Information
History… The Staffing Management Association
(SMA) has a long-standing history of serving and advancing staffing
professionals across the United States. It was founded in 1969
in Boston, MA, maintained a local, regional chapter based in the
Boston, MA area as well as throughout the United States and built
a solid organization to strengthen the capability, results, and
professional networks in the areas of recruitment, retention, and
diversity. Some of you may be familiar with SMA’s affiliation with
the Society for Human Resource Management in 1999 and subsequent
transition to that of a Professional Emphasis Group (PEG) within
the SHRM organization. When it affiliated with SHRM it had 1,150
members and when it reached its peak as a SHRM PEG, 8,000 members.
Similarly, its conference attendees went from 300 to 1,000.
When SHRM restructured, the PEG structure was dissolved. But, because
SMA had been a sizable professional association for 34 years and
because the nature of focus is different from that of our generalist
chapters, SHRM is providing the opportunity to form SMA Chapters
or SMA Emphasis Groups within existing chapters to support Staffing
Professionals throughout the United States.
A Strategic Decision… In the early fall of 2004, a small group
made a decision to form one, centralized SMA chapter in Connecticut
(rather than six different emphasis groups within each chapter)
– one that would completely focus on meeting the needs of staffing
leaders and professionals. We received the support of the six existing
Chapter Presidents in Connecticut to start an independent chapter
which will focus on staffing and diversity. We have pledged to
collaborate with and educationally support the generalist chapters.
The new Chapter, The Staffing Management Association of Southern
New England was chartered on April 27, 2005. Officers were elected
and a group of 30 were received as Charter members. The Chapter
is now operational and seeking to add new members. If your primary
professional function is in staffing and/or diversity, you are
encouraged to apply for membership. You must be a national SHRM
member in order to join this Chapter. Cost is $50.00 per year.
